Nick Samaras, a member of Silliman College, was born in Dayton, Ohio and traveled extensively with his family. He attended high schools in Ohio and Missouri and, ultimately, graduated from the International School in Geneva, Switzerland.

Following his graduation, Nick continued to travel, living in Switzerland, Papeete, Tahiti where he was self-employed; and, ultimately, in Mill Valley, California, where he was a resident at the time of his death on March 9, 1979, at the age of 38.

Nick left a widow, Patricia, and a daughter Isabel, who were resided in Arlington, Virginia.

Nick was a Director of the Anglo-French Business Men's Association during his stay in Tahiti, but little else is known about his activities during the years prior to his death.
