Carl Kirsh, although born in New York City, graduated from Oak Park and River Forest High School, Oak Park, Illinois. Carl was a resident of Silliman and majored in philosophy as an undergraduate.

After graduation, Carl returned to the Chicago area and was employed as a research lab technician at the United States Veterans Hospital in Hines, Illinois. Subsequently, he obtained a degree as a Research Technician in Nuclear Medicine from the Veterans Administration in 1974. Carl, who resided in Chicago at the time of his death, died in the Spring of 1983 at the age of 41 after a long illness. He never married
