Sam Johnston was born in Cedar Rapids, Iowa where he attended high school until his family moved to Darien, Connecticut. He graduated from Darien High School in 1958. Sam entered Yale with our class but graduated in 1963. He resided in Ezra Stiles his last year. Sam, a member of St. Anthony's and Dwight Hall, played football and soccer at Yale.

After graduation, Sam obtained a Master's Degree at the University of California at Berkeley. He was a deputy probation officer for Alameda County, California. He was also a teacher at the College of Marin in California. He was married to the former Tracy Lee Joos but had no children.

Unfortunately, Sam sustained serious injuries in an accident in 1969 from which he never fully recovered. In his troubled later years he resided in Connecticut. Sam died November 24, 1977, at the age of 37 as a result of a fall from East Rock here in New Haven. Despite his injuries, Sam attended our Class Reunions prior to his death.
