HENRY L. CAULKINS, JR.
Born: November 18, 1939
Henry "Mick" Caulkins was born in Grosse Pointe, Michigan, son of Henry Lewis and Ruth Stone Caulkins. He prepared for Yale at Choate graduating in 1957. At Yale he was originally with the Class of 1961 but graduated with our class in 1962 after his 5 year program, earning his degree in mechanical engineering. He was a resident of Saybrook. After graduation he studied forestry at the University of Michigan.
He married Wendy Lamb in Grosse Point in 1963. They lived in Ann Arbor, Michigan until 1969 when they settled in Cheboygan, Michigan where he lived until his death. Mick was an active member of the Cheboygan community, serving on the boards of Citizen's National Bank and the Cheboygan Memorial Hospital, and was a supporter of the Cheboygan Opera House and the Mackinac Associates. Mick was also a generous donor to Choate, enough so that he was named to the Founders Associates, those alumni who have given generously to the school.
He owned and operated the Anchor Inn Marina, serving local and transient boaters. His favorite place was in a boat on the water. With his wife Wendy, they often traveled to destinations around the world. Mick also enjoyed hunting, fishing and bowling. He was an accomplished bowler from his youth having been named Junior Champion in Detroit at age 15.
He appreciated great food and wine, especially wild game, rare beef, and a French Burgundy. He was known for his sense of humor, keen wit, and generosity. University of Michigan football games in Ann Arbor were always a favorite as well. He will be remembered as someone who contributed much to his community, his friends, and especially his family.
His wife Wendy preceded Mick in death in 2012. His brother Ralph also predeceased him. He is survived by his daughter Lee (Kevin) Keller of Marietta, Georgia, his son Hank (Margaret Allen) Caulkins of Rockford, Michigan and 5 grandchildren Courtney, Kaitlyn, Emma and Henry IV of Rockford and Sarah Keller of Marietta.
