JAMES ARTHUR CARTHAUSBorn: August 6, 1940 Jim Carthaus was born in Chicago, son of William James and Kathryn Elaina Curtain Carthaus. He prepared for Yale at St. Thomas Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota. In his youth he also lived in Tulsa and Bronxville, NY. Jim was a member of Silliman where he was president of the College Council senior year. He was a leader of the Yale Charities Drive, serving as publicity director and as treasurer. He was on the Class Gift Executive Committee and an Alumni Fund agent. Jim was an economics major. After Yale he attended and graduated from the London School of Economics with a business degree in 1963. Upon his return to New York, Jim commenced his distinguished career in banking and finance. Starting at Citibank in 1963, he progressed to National Bank of North America as a Vice President, to Vice President and a director at Bell Equipment and then to President and CEO of Shearson Leasing Co., and Executive VP and Director of Financial Services of Shearson Lehman Brothers. His final position was as Chairman/Director of Scott Macon Ltd., a financial management firm, a leadership position which he continued to hold as Chairman after his nominal retirement in the late 1990s. Jim's first marriage terminated in divorce. In 1998, he met Linda in Naples, Florida where he had located after retirement. They married in 2000 and in Linda's words, "we were never apart thereafter." An active member in business and the community, Jim held executive and civic responsibilities over his lifetime such as Trustee in Bankruptcy, Director of Franciscan Sisters of the Poor Foundation, Inc., Public Director of the National Waterways Foundation, Chairman of the Lawrence Hospital Finance Committee, Chairman of the Ethics Board for the Village of Bronxville, Director of United Fund of Bronxville, Director of the Siwanoy Country Club, Director of Lending Tree, Inc., and others. Jim was a loyal and dedicated Yale alumnus, serving with the Yale Alumni Fund and as an active participant in our class reunions and fund raising and serving on the Class Council. Although he enjoyed retirement in Florida, Jim had a special place in his heart for Vermont where he and Linda had a home in the village of Peru in the Green Mountains and spent the summers. He and Linda shared a passion for travel and wine. Jim served as Le Maitre of Commanderie De Bordeaux, Chambellan of Le Confrerie des Chevailiers du Tastevin in Naples, Florida and traveling for several weeks to France in the summers. In addition to Linda, Jim is survived by his sons, William "Jay" Carthaus (wife Claudia) of Greenwich and Ethan Carter Carthaus of Oceanside, California; his brother Dick and wife Marcia of Naples; Linda's children Lora Brothers of Phoenix and Daniel Davis of Naples; four grandchildren Alexis Davis, Troy Davis, Elizabeth Davis, and Arianna Davis, and many nieces and nephews. Linda arranged for Jim to be buried in Peru, Vermont. The family suggested that contributions in memory of Jim be made to the Mountain Valley Medical Center in Londonderry, Vermont. |
