BOYD P. BROWN, JR.

Born: December 31, 1940
Died: June 16, 2013

Boyd Paterno Brown, Jr., was born in Port Chester, NY, son of Boyd Paterno Brown and Marian Liberty Semler Brown. Boyd's entry in the 1962 Banner also listed his stepfather John William Tynan and his stepmother Lillian Mae Voit Brown. Boyd prepared for Yale at Loomis Chafee (then known as the Loomis School) in Windsor, CT.

At Yale Boyd was a resident of Jonathan Edwards. He rowed on the freshman crew, earning his numerals. He was assistant manager of the Varsity heavyweight crew in 1960 and 1961 and manager of the Varsity 150 pound crew our senior year for which he was awarded his "Y" with crossed oars. He was a history major.

Shortly after graduation, Boyd joined the Navy. After completing OCS, he had sea duty on 2 destroyers and a tour in Vietnam as an operations officer on an advisory team. A quote from Boyd published in our class Alumni Notes in 1968 captured his wry sense of humor: he was, he wrote, "enjoying the delights of this Pacific paradise at the expense of Uncle Sam while stoutly defending our country against the Yellow Peril or what passes for it these days." Although he expressed an intention to make the Navy a career, he did not do so but did continue in the Navy Reserve until 1972, reaching the rank of Lieutenant Commander.

Boyd subsequently relocated with his wife Marguerite (Bonnie) Brown to Augusta, Maine where they raised their family and Boyd commenced his career in sales. He sold sporting goods and life insurance before becoming a real estate broker. Boyd was a long time member of the Maine Board of Realtors and also worked in computer technical support for Occupational Health Research in Skowhegan, Maine.

Boyd was an avid outdoorsman and enjoyed the outdoor benefits offered in Maine, including especially his time at his camps on Millinocket Lake, which he described as "the most beautiful place on earth." He was a Registered Maine Guide, and loved fishing, hunting and hiking. In 2001 he completed the first leg of a through hike on the Appalachian Trail with his son Boyd, III. He finished the final half of the Appalachian Trail in 2003.

His biographical entry in our class 25th Reunion Book records that his varied careers also included service as the tax collector for his municipal government and owner of a self-service storage facility.

He retired to his home on Millinocket Lake which he named "Journey's End."

Boyd's marriage to Marguerite terminated in divorce. He was survived by his daughter Beverly Lawrence of North Yarmouth, Maine and his son Boyd III of Ashford, Connecticut. He was predeceased by his parents, his step-parents, his brother Gary Brown and his half-brother Keith Brown. During the last several years of his life Boyd was a resident of the Maine Veteran's Home in Scarborough where he died June 16, 2013.

The family requested that donations be made to the Alzheimer's Association in Boyd's memory.

In addition to published sources, the Loomis Chaffee School graciously supplied information on Boyd's life.
