PETER S. BARRYBorn: September 8, 1940 Peter S. Barry was born in Stamford, Connecticut, son of Horace and Jane (Roemler) Barry. He grew up in New Canaan and graduated from Kent School. Peter was with our class at Yale for 2½ years. He was a resident of Davenport College. He then spent 4 years in the Navy as an electronics technician including service aboard the aircraft carrier U.S.S. Essex in support of the Bay of Pigs affair and during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After his discharge Peter returned to Yale for 1 semester and then began work in the field of ultrasonic instrumentation. He was an operations manager in the nuclear industry for 20 years. Except for a year in Denver he lived in Connecticut. During this time he and his first wife Cathy had 2 children, daughter Joan and son Peter. He also raced Austin Healys for 5 years until back surgery took him out of the driver's seat. In 1988 both his nuclear career and his marriage ended. However, he met Mary Kay "KK" Sherman who was employed in publishing and they fell in love, moving to New Hampshire where she had her business. They married November 5, 1988. Peter worked a variety of jobs until 1995 when he became manager of Inkware of Meredith, N.H., a company producing ink for digital printers. He was with Inkware for 13 years. He also started a photography business call Peak Images in Gifford, N.H., specializing in wedding photography and scenic pictures of the world around him. Peter loved to ski and spent his free time during the winters on the nearby New Hampshire mountain slopes. Peter and KK traveled extensively including a cruise through French Polynesia, an Alaskan cruise, the Oregon coast, Italy and many other exotic places. In 2003 Peter had a serious ski accident at Tahoe. In his submission for his Kent 50th Reunion Book in 2008 he reported that he had a "couple of major medical issues resulting from this ski accident." His declining health was also impacted by an auto accident in May 2008 when he was driving to Kent for the reunion. He and Mary Kay resided in Gilford, N.H. at the time of his death. Peter leaves his wife Mary Kay, his son Peter H. Barry of North San Juan, California, and a daughter Joan. He was also survived by his brother Robert and sister-in-law Sandy of Topsham, Maine, his sister Ann Barry and her husband Dennis Landis of Brooklyn, Connecticut and his mother-in-law Dorothy Sherman of Newtown, Connecticut. He was very devoted to his wife's family and they to him. In addition to his wife's mother, he was survived by Mary Kay's brother George (wife Lynne), her brother Edward (wife Heidi Staniszewski). Mary Kay has 3 grandchildren whom Peter thought of as his own. In lieu of flowers the family asked that donations be made to the New Hampshire Humane Society. Information for this essay was supplied by his widow Mary Kay, his Yale and Kent classmate Marsh Hamilton and Kent School. |
