Norman V. Chimenti

Norm ChimentiNorman V. “Norm” Chimenti passed away April 7, 2024 after succumbing to a rare cancer. Born in Chicago, Norm graduated from Hinsdale High School, where he was an outstanding student and athlete. Norm was active in student government and was named to the Illinois High School All State Football team his senior year. At Yale Norm roomed with Jim Pappas in Pierson and majored in sociology. He played varsity football and lacrosse, and was a member of Delta Kappa Epsilon and Skull and Bones.

Norm served on active duty as a Sergeant in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1963-1964 before returning to study at Yale Law School. On a fateful flight home to Chicago in 1965 while he was in law school, Norm struck up a conversation with a TWA flight attendant, Barbara Jean (BJ) Morgan. Things moved quickly, and they were married five months later. Their union lasted 55 years, ending only with BJ’s death from cancer in 2021. BJ loved animals, and in her memory, Norm established the BJ Chimenti Angel Fund for Veterans and Pets at Hinsdale Humane Society. Norm and BJ had two sons, Derek and Chad, and four grandchildren.

After obtaining his law degree in 1967, Norm returned home to Hinsdale to put his legal training to use. He spent four years at a large Chicago law firm, then served as Vice President and General Counsel for the Kroehler Manufacturing Company from 1971 to 1980. After three years in private practice, he became Vice President of Bulkmatic Transport Company from 1984 to 1990. In his late career, he was a general partner of the Oak Brook law firm of Martin, Craig, Chester & Sonnenschein from 1990 to 2011, and was subsequently Of Counsel to the Wheaton law firm of Clausen Miller.

Much of Norm’s work was in employment, labor and environmental law. He was a member of the Labor and Employment Law and Environmental Law Committees of the Chicago and DuPage County Bar Associations, and was a member of the Illinois Bar Association. In 1993, Norm was appointed by Governor Edgar to the Illinois Small Business Assistance Task Force, and he served for eight years as a Special Assistant Attorney General to the Illinois Attorney General s Office. Norm was also active in philanthropy and community service, providing legal services to a number of not-for-profit organizations. He helped to form the Hinsdale Falcon Football Program, served for several years as Chair of the Hinsdale Plan Commission and also chaired the Ad Hoc Hinsdale Historic Preservation Task Force. Norm served many boards, including the Chicago Yale Club, Wellness House, and the Mishawaka Foundation. Norm and BJ co-founded the Community House Players theater group in Hinsdale.
