James Gordon Mills, nicknamed Jake, was born and raised in Washington, D.C., son of Benjamin Judson and Almira Livingston Mills. He prepared for Yale at St. Albans School on Wisconsin Avenue in D.C. adjacent to the National Cathedral.
Jake was a member of Davenport College and played in several jazz bands on campus. He was an English major. He roomed with Arne Rode. After Yale he attended law school graduating from American University Law School in D.C.
He worked for many years as a lawyer with the Federal Trade Commission. Although a born and bred Washingtonian he purchased an historic stone house in Purcellville, Virginia, near Hillsboro around 1970 and resided in the Virginia countryside the balance of his life.
Jake’s loves were family, country living, continuing his music hobby as a drummer and his inseparable Border Collies.
Jake was survived by his wife Patricia, sons Judson and Jason and his 4 grandsons, Dalton, Jagger, Cash, and Aubrey. A Memorial Service was held for Jake in June 2019 at Goose Creek Friends Meeting House in Purcellville, Virginia.
