VOL. XVIII NO. 3 REILLY: TRUMP? ROSENKRANZ: DEBATES? COMMENTS SECTION POLITICS Influential classmates support Hillary, sanity The Administrator of the federal Environmental Protection Administration in George H.W. Bush's cabinet, Bill Reilly, and Bob Rosenkranz (the highly successful financier whose foundation helped found and supports the ten-year-old, nationally-broadcast Intelligence Squared debates) have jumped into the US presidential campaign. * In a note written especially for readers of this website, Bill explains here (click) how his joint statement endorsing Hillary Clinton with another former EPA head in Republican administrations, William Ruckelshaus, was encouraged by the Clinton campaign (and, of course, by his analysis of Donald Trump). The statement and Washington Post coverage are here, too. * Click here to read Bob's Wall Street Journal piece calling for this fall's presidential debates to get real with the Oxford-style format. * Pile in -- or on - here. Classmates will be interested in your comments, whether brief or lengthy. SPORTS The decline of Olympic sportsmanship "Playing with athletes as if they were insensitive animals was rare before 1936; much more common afterward." By Alan Cunningham Ed note: "Crab" Cunningham, a Yale varsity swimmer, won third, fifth and sixth place medals in the 1961 NCAA and AAU championships, "including two medley relay medals thanks to Mike Austin's anchor legs." His nickname has long been "crab" because of his unique freestyle stroke. During this year's Olympics, he wrote: I have managed to see NBC's evening coverage of Olympic swimming and, forgive me, but I am increasingly annoyed by the Michael Phelps saga; did he really have to swim both freestyle relays? I am grateful for NBC's coverage of some magnificent swimming, but the interviews are painful: all that sincerity, with a few exceptions, brings me close to retching. Lurking in the background are the corporate sponsors and, for a few swimmers, agents and contracts to turn medals into commercial profit. Along with legitimate athletic achievement you have carefully orchestrated "branding." I hope it is good stuff that Michael Phelps will be selling, but I am afraid he will inspire mostly vanity, envy, conspicuous consumption and waste. Click here to read more of Alan's "rant."
