VOL. XVIX NO. 7 YALE '62 SPECIAL EDITION "I Was Kidnapped Three Times at Gunpoint" ![]() Ed note: The irony-tinged letter below to family and friends is from our classmate George Cleary, who gave me permission to share it. It was passed to me by a prep school friend of George's at Portsmouth Abbey. For background, the friend, John Tepper-Marlin, explained that George "is the son of the founder of the law firm Cleary Gottlieb Steen & Hamilton. I remember George as studious and very interested in cars. (You will notice his emphasis in the letter below on the cost of maintaining his car/truck in Venezuela.) "He once had hundreds of cattle. Now he has three. He went to Venezuela as part of a Catholic mission. He liked the country and married a Venezuelan woman. [George is now a Venezuelan citizen, having relinquished his US status.] He bought a ranch or two. "The rest is history. The ranches failed. His sons are US citizens and have left for the United States." By George E. Cleary, Jr. (Prelude:) I suspect I haven't sent you the worst, which was one and two years ago: I was kidnapped three times at gunpoint. On two of those occasions, my wife and I were tied up all night while armed gangs ransacked our house and took almost everything we owned, from broken hearing aids to refrigerators. I have a rather good opinion of them: 1. They didn't kill us. 2. They got rid of a lot of stuff we now don't have to move. 3. They gave us back our truck the next day. Things could have been much worse. Click here for the rest. NECROLOGY Sadly, we must announce the recent deaths of Charles Catlin and Alf Jordan. In due course, Charles' obituary will posted on this site. Alf Jordan's is now present on this site.
